Segment NO 5

theme:   second mystery of light – The Wedding at Cana

call to prayer & opening prayer: As for the Order Prayers

intention:         “May we learn the compassion of Christ towards those in our communities”

word of reflection:  Reflect on the following words of the Pope:

The Mysteries of Light

Another mystery of light is the first of the signs, given at Cana (cf. Jn 2:1- 12), when Christ changes water into wine and opens the hearts of the disciples to faith, thanks to the intervention of Mary, the first among believers.

John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae – The Rosary of the Virgin Mary  #21

In these mysteries, apart from the miracle at Cana, the presence of Mary remains in the background. The Gospels make only the briefest reference to her occasional presence at one moment or other during the preaching of Jesus (cf. Mk 3:31-5; Jn 2:12), and they give no indication that she was present at the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. Yet the role she assumed at Cana in some way accompanies Christ throughout his ministry. The revelation made directly by the Father at the Baptism in the Jordan and echoed by John the Baptist is placed upon Mary's lips at Cana, and it becomes the great maternal counsel which Mary addresses to the Church of every age: "Do whatever he tells you" (Jn 2:5). This counsel is a fitting introduction to the words and signs of Christ's public ministry and it forms the Marian foundation of all the "mysteries of light".

Allow a few moments reflective silence

Leader:     The Second Luminous Mystery – The Wedding Feast at Cana. Jesus' first miracle or sign occurs in the very intimate and very human setting of a wedding banquet. No one is healed here, no one raised from the dead. There is nothing particularly fantastic or dramatic happening at Cana. Jesus responds, at the repeated insistence of his Mother, to a simple human need. "They have no wine." Not a great need, not an alleviation of thirst. Rather, Jesus works this miracle to spare embarrassment for the bridegroom and bride, so that the joy of their wedding day may not be darkened in any way. Not only does Jesus turn water into wine, he turns the water into very good wine. His love and tenderness for the young couple, and for us, is overflowing, a no-holds-barred generosity. "Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full" (Jn 16, 24). With this first miracle Jesus reveals who he is, Our Savior, responsive to our every need, great or small, especially when it is asked through the intercession of Mary.

The Word of God is now proclaimed

word of god

The Gospel according to John 2: 1-11

The Word of God is now read aloud slowly and prayerfully

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom

and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now."

Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

After a brief time of reflection  the prayer continues:

Leader & all:  Our Father…

Leader:           We will be the light of Christ as we respond to his call and to what our lives as disciples asks of us. We must be open to “do whatever he tells” us in order that the glory of God shines in us and through us to the world.

Leader & all:  Hail Mary  (10 times)

Leader:           For the gift of a heart that is open to true faith, we give praise to God:

Leader & all:  Glory be to the Father…

The meeting proceeds

closing prayers:  As for the Order Prayers at the Closing of the Meeting.
