FOREWORD.

Knights of the Southern Cross – Australia

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted by Pope St Pius V after the battle of Lepanto, which took place in 1570. In modern times many Popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. Pope John Paul II has been conspicuous for his devotion to the mother of God and has made a substantial change to the Rosary itself by proposing an additional five mysteries. Such is the importance of this change that the members of the National Executive of the Knights of the Southern Cross asked that the 2005 Formation Program might concentrate on these mysteries.

Because she is the mother of Christ. Mary is the mother of the Church. The Decree of the Second Vatican Council on the Church says that Mary "figures profoundly in the history of salvation and in a certain way mirrors within herself the central truths of the faith. Hence, when she is being preached and venerated, she summons the faithful to her son and his sacrifice and to love for the Father".

The new mysteries of the Rosary again make it clear that devotion to Mary does not stop with Mary but leads us to God. It is my prayer that, with the help of Mary, we all might believe more and more in the transforming power of love and might acquire new confidence and new hope. Let us ask her to intercede for us with Jesus Christ her Son.

I wish to express my thanks to Sister Anne McMillan, of the Ballarat Pastoral Ministry Office, for her considerable assistance in the preparation of this Program.

Points for Successful Formation Programmes

  • Choose a formation leader for the year so that someone is responsible for the facilitation of the segment.

·        These formation segments require each participant to ideally have his own copy of the Readings, therefore a copy of the Session should be provided for each member at the each meeting.

  • Abide strictly to the allotted time; not less than twenty nor more than thirty minutes.
