segment NO 5

theme:        “the christian way of life”

call to prayer & opening prayer:

As for the Order Prayers

focus:

To foster the Christian Way of Life throughout the Nation.”

 (Objects of the Order 2)

word of reflection

Reflect on the reading of the following words taken from the documents of the Church:

The fidelity of the baptized is a primordial condition for the proclamation of the Gospel and for the Church’s mission in the world. In order that the message of salvation can show the power of its truth and radiance before men, it must be authenticated by the witness of the life of Christians. The witness of a Christian life and good works done in a supernatural spirit have great power to draw men to the faith and to God. Because they are members of the Body whose Head is Christ, Christians contribute to building up the Church by the constancy of their convictions and their moral lives. The Church increases, grows and develops through the holiness of her faithful.                                      Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2204-5

A Christian community is never meant to be just a comfortable place for its members. The Synod Fathers (Bishops of Oceania) wanted to encourage the local communities to look beyond their own immediate concerns and reach out to others. The parish as a community cannot insulate itself from the realities of the world around it. The Christian community must be attentive to issues of social justice and spiritual hunger in society. What Jesus offers to his followers must be shared with all the peoples of Oceania, whatever their situation. For in him alone is the fullness of life.                                                             John Paul II, Ecclesia in Oceania – The Church in Oceania # 13

Allow a few moments reflective silence, then proclaim the Word of God

word of god

&  The Gospel according to Matthew 5:1-16

The Word of God is now read aloud slowly and prayerfully

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.

Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.

No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

$ For the next five minutes silently read and reflect on the readings.

Underline what you  consider to be key words and/or phrases for you.

the sharing

Now bring your insights and reflection around the theme and the Readings into discussion of the following:                                                                                                       (10 mins)

v     What are the fundamentals of a “Christian Way of Life”?

v     What are some of the difficulties for the Christian way in the modern world?

v     How can you take the Christian way of life into today’s Australia?

conclusion

Leader:         As we conclude this time of reflection, let us give praise to God as we say:

All:                  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

world without end.  Amen.

The meeting proceeds

closing prayers:  As for the Order Prayers at the Closing of the Meeting.
